Many Fear Dead In Bayelsa, communities clashed over land dispute

Two communities identified as Opolo and Okutukutu, in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State were involved in a communal clash over land dispute on Monday.

The violent clash resulted to a bloody crisis and bonfires in the area, forcing motorists and other road users to divert to other routes.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Government said “a recent attack on Opolo, carried out by some neighbouring Okutukutu community had resulted to some many casualties.”
Also, the Deputy Governor of the state, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Doubara Atasi condemned the attack and directed relevant security agencies to fish out the perpetrators for prosecution in accordance with the rule of law.

He further stated that, “The present administration would not condone a situation where individuals or communities resort to violence and physical attacks over territorial or land boundary disputes, especially when such matters are pending in the law court of competent jurisdiction.”

The Deputy Governor therefore call on the two communities to refrain from taking any further action liable to bringing about the breakdown of law and order in the area.
He urge them to put down their sword and arm while government is taking every necessary step to resolve the issue.

He enjoin them to embrace peace,unity and to stop raising arm against each other, saying that Bayelsa State is known for peace so they should embrace it and stop fighting, judging from the fact of what the volence clash have cost.

The deputy governor expressed regrets over the loss of lives and properties from the incident, and assured the bereaved families that the government would do everything within its powers to ensure justice is being served.
