Former NBA President Akpata Wins LP Governorship Ticket

A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Olumide Akpata has emerged as the Labour Party (LP) flag bearer for the 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

Akpata scored 316 votes to win the exercise held at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, Airport Road in Benin City, Edo State capital on Friday.

His victory comes months after he declared interest in the Edo State governorship race under the Labour Party.

Recall that he had in October; visited the Edo LP secretariat in Benin City to formally declare his interest in the race, pinning the decision on his love for the people.

“My interest is for the people of Edo State. And what I find out about politics and governance in Nigeria today is that the people have been taken out of the equation. Nobody cares about the people,” Akpata told the mammoth crowd that welcomed him.

The former NBA president, last August, disclosed via his X handle that he joined LP in March 2023 and had also attended the party’s meeting in his Ward.

“Quite a number of people called/messaged me to confirm the news currently making the rounds that I have joined a political party.

“Yes, I have joined the Labour Party in March this year (2023) and on Sunday I attended my first Ward Meeting at Oredo Ward 6, in Benin City, where I was formally introduced to members of the ward and presented with my party membership card.”

Mr Akpata said he joined the LP because he “got tired” of complaining about the happenings in Nigeria.

The 51-year-old Senior Advocate of Nigeria first announced  his ambition for the governorship race last October at his birthday celebration in Benin, Edo State.
