Famous Nollywood Actress Ini Edo has reportedly lost the rights to the popular Netflix series ‘Shanty Town’ to filmmaker Chinenye Nworah after several legal battles.

In January 2024, Ini Edo and Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP) filed a double intellectual property petition against Chinenye Nworah and her production company, ‘Giant Creative Media Limited’ (GCM), over the trademark rights of the popular Netflix series, “Shanty Town”.

The actress filed a petition to claim her ownership of the trademarks and copyrights associated with ‘Shanty Town.’

Nworah and GCM, her production company, achieved a significant legal triumph when the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Trademark Registry ruled in their favour. The ruling dismissed Ini Edo’s petition, deeming it lacking in merit and frivolous.

Upon winning the case, Nworah’s attorney, Olisa Agbakoba, emphasized the significance of safeguarding creative works and guaranteeing equitable remuneration for artists. He stated that the successful defence of these claims served as a crucial precedent in the ongoing effort to protect the rights of creative individuals and ensure fair compensation within the industry.
