The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday announced the release of the 2024 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

The examination body said 1,332,089, which represents 73.79 percent of the total of 1,805,216 candidates that wrote the examination, came out with credits in a minimum of five subjects.

While 1,301,941 candidates, which represent 72.12 percent, obtained credits in English Language, Mathematics, and a minimum of five other subjects.

Amos Dangut, WEAC’s Head of Nigeria Office (HNO), in the announcement, noted that the statistics of his year performance fell 7.9 percent compared to 2023.

“This is 4.37 percent lower than the 16.29 percent recorded in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023,” he said.

The increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall, despite the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools, are other nagging issues.”

He also said that all cases of the withheld results are under probing and that the report of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate Council for consideration and final decisions.

“The council will continue to sanction all cases of examination malpractice as schools, supervisors, teachers and candidates perpetrating this evil are not helping the educational system. All hands must, therefore, be on deck to sanitise the system,” he said.

He lamented the inflation rate in the country noting that it affected everything including the Council that it added to the challenges facing the body in terms of the cost of conducting examinations.

“During the course of inspection, activities of rogue website operators did not go unnoticed as some of these miscreants are already having a taste of their pudding. A few supervisors and invigilators who were caught aiding and abetting examination malpractice were also brought to book.”
