The Academic Staff Union Universities (ASUU) plans a fresh nationwide strike, with the conclusion to issue 21 days’ notice to the federal government.
The union reached this decision during National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to Daily Trust, credible sources who participated in the meeting said their plans to embark on this fresh nationwide strike were due to many unfulfilled promises by the Federal government
Speaking on the grounds of anonymity, one of the officials who said his identity should be hidden because he was not authorized to speak explained to Daily Trust correspondent that the 21-day notice was given to satisfy the requirements of the Trade Dispute Act.
He said one of their complaints was that, despite President Tinubu’s pronouncement that university lecturers be removed from IPPIS, the platform was still being used for their salary payment.
He further noted that the platform has continued to prune its members’ salaries and that there are many other unresolved issues on the ground.
“You and I know that there are many unresolved issues on the ground. We won’t hesitate to embark on another strike if our demands are not met.
“Our demands are very clear, but the government thinks they are smart and play on our intelligence,” the university lecturer said.
According to another official who chose to remain anonymous for similar reasons, the “letter of notice” will reach the Federal Ministries of Education and Labour on Tuesday.
As of the time of this report, all efforts to reach ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke and the spokesperson of the Labour union, Mrs Patience Onuobia, for verification did not yield results.
According to Daily Trust, “several phone calls to the ASUU President were not answered, and he was yet to reply to a text message sent to him.”
